Summer at Little Steps: sunny days, water play, and steady routines
By Smita Bhavsar · June 9, 2026 · 2 min read
Summer is one of my favourite seasons with the little ones. The days are long, the backyard is calling, and there’s a special kind of joy in a three-year-old discovering a sprinkler for the first time. We’re open all summer, Monday to Friday, and here’s a peek at what the season looks like at Little Steps.
Long mornings outside
When the Calgary weather cooperates (we know — that’s not every day!), we spend our best hours outdoors in the morning before it gets too warm. Running, climbing, digging, blowing bubbles, chalk on the patio — all that big-body movement is exactly what growing children need. It builds strength and coordination, and honestly, it makes for better nappers come the afternoon.
Water play to stay cool
Few things beat a hot day like water play. Sprinklers, a water table, cups and funnels — simple, supervised water fun is a summer highlight. It’s playful, but it’s also sneaky learning: pouring, measuring, cause-and-effect, taking turns. The giggles are a bonus.
Sun safety, the way I’d want for my own
Little ones need extra care in the summer sun, and I treat it the way I’d want for my own child:
- Shade and timing — outdoor play happens in the cooler parts of the day, with shade always nearby.
- Sunscreen — applied before outdoor play (please send your child’s preferred sunscreen, and let me know about any sensitivities).
- Hydration — water breaks often; a labelled water bottle from home is perfect.
- Sun hats and light clothing — a hat and a spare change of clothes make hot, messy days easier.
A quick summer packing list: sun hat, sunscreen, labelled water bottle, and a spare set of clothes. I’ll handle the rest.
Crafts and seasonal themes
Indoors, summer means bright, hands-on crafts — think suns, flowers, bugs, and beach themes — plus our usual music, stories, and cultural activities. Rainy or smoky days (Calgary summers have those too) become cozy creative days inside.
Steady routines, even in summer
Here’s the part I care about most: even though summer feels free and easy, we keep our daily rhythm. Circle time, learning activities, a home-cooked lunch, quiet rest, snacks, and creative play still anchor every day. Children thrive on knowing what comes next — and a predictable routine is what lets them relax and enjoy all the summer fun without getting overtired or overwhelmed. Freedom inside a dependable frame: that’s the Little Steps way, all year round.
Summer spots are open
Summer is a common time for families to start or change childcare — a new job, an older sibling home from school, or planning ahead for fall. If you’re looking for warm, licensed care for your 3-to-6-year-old in Redstone NE, I’d love to meet you.
