Young children thrive on routine. They like knowing what comes next — it helps them feel safe, which is when real learning happens. Parents often ask what a day with me actually looks like, so here’s a gentle walk-through. Real days bend with the weather and the children’s energy, but this is our rhythm.

Morning: warm arrivals and circle time

The day starts softly. As little ones arrive, there’s quiet free play and a warm hello for each child — and a real goodbye for you, so drop-off feels secure. Early arrivals can have a little breakfast.

Mid-morning we gather for circle time: calendar, weather, a song or two, a story, and a chance for everyone to share. It’s the heartbeat of our morning and a lovely way to build language and confidence.

Late morning: learning through play

Then we move into learning time — letters, numbers, colours, shapes — always hands-on and tied to the week’s theme. At this age, play is learning. We build, sort, paint, and explore, and the “lessons” feel like fun.

When the Calgary weather cooperates, we get outside for big-body play. Fresh air and movement do wonders for focus and mood.

Midday: lunch and rest

Around late morning we sit down together for a home-cooked lunch — nutritious, familiar, and eaten at the table like a little family. After lunch comes quiet rest time: nap mats out, lights low, soft music for the ones who need it. Even children who don’t sleep get a calm reset.

Afternoon: creativity and connection

Afternoons are my favourite. After a snack, we move into creative play — art, crafts, music, dance, and cultural activities. This is where personalities shine and little friendships grow.

As the day winds down, we tidy up together (yes, even the three-year-olds help) and get ready for pickup. Each family gets a warm “see you tomorrow” and a few words about how the day went — because you should never feel like you missed it.

Why the rhythm matters

A predictable day isn’t about being rigid. It’s about giving children a dependable frame so they can relax, explore, and grow inside it. That balance — structure and warmth — is what I’ve built over 15+ years, and it’s the heart of Little Steps.
